Quercus agrifolia is a majestic oak tree native to the coastal regions of California. Known for its large, spreading canopy and gnarled, twisted trunk, the Coast Live Oak can grow up to 60 feet tall and provide ample shade.
Coast Live Oak is a large, slow-growing evergreen tree that prefers hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters in its native habitat and is cold hardy to 10?. The oval, leathery leaves are dark green with spiny-toothed margins that curl slightly underneath. Small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in the spring are followed by singular, medium brown acorns that are slender and pointed and ripen in fall. The smooth grey bark on young trees becomes deeply fissured with old age which adds to the beauty of this tree. Quercus agrifolia can be grown with selective pruning into a standard tree form but the Coast Live Oak is best in its natural form which is often low branching or multi-trunk.
Also known as California Live Oak, Coast Live Oak looks great in the landscape when planted in a woodland setting with other drought tolerant California native plants like Ceanothus (California Lilac), Rhamnus (Coffeeberry), or Heteromeles (Toyon). A beautiful tree that attracts birds, butterflies, and so many other beneficial pollinators and wildlife. This picturesque tree is perfect for slopes and hillsides.
